DoVa3's assessment is correct, wages and salaries in this area are considerably lower than those on the coasts. Median income in Louisville is a little over 60 K, and less than 55 K for Kentucky as a whole, whereas some place like San Francisco is almost double that at a little less than 120 K, with California as a whole being about 80.
