Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. It has a section on the economics of upscale prostitution. What he describes is much of what RJHunter is talking about. Those who enter the profession of prostitution by choice. He does touch on streetwalking, which to me, is a very different situation. It is those who are driven into prostitution by circumstances. Both viewpoints are entirely accurate for the populations that they are talking about, but we have to remember that there are very different reasons for their actions and not paint them with too broad a brush.

It is easy to rationalize our own actions by telling ourselves that we are only taking advantage of what is offered without really looking at why it is offered. The fact is, at the street level of prostitution, we are generally enabling addictions and are exploiting people who are broken in some way. I guess that is why I have backed off the streets and have a small number of the women described above that I see. There is still an underlying financial transaction there, but the motivations for that transaction are much different and are easier for me to reconcile in my conscience.
