You are right. The point of all the social distancing was to flatten the curve and not overwhelm the healthcare system. People with pre-existing respiratory issues, autoimmune issues (weak immune systems), the elderly, obese, diabetics, and a few other ailments are the most at risk and require being in an ICU hooked up to ventilators if they get the worst of this, and that equipment is or was in short supply. This country along with many others was not prepared for something like this.

Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in an interview given March 30:
"One of the pieces of information that we have pretty much confirmed now is that a significant number of individuals that are infected actually remain asymptomatic. That may be as many as 25%. That's important, because now you have individuals that may not have any symptoms that can contribute to transmission, and we have learned that in fact they do contribute to transmission."
I interpret this to mean 25% of individuals testing positive are asymptomatic, not 25% of the population. Please understand I did not intend to get into a pissing match over this.
