Korean Prostitutes found to make $10,000 a month
I found this article and thought it was interesting (although not very well written). Here is the link: http://hanopolis.com/?articleNo=17202&story/Korean-prostitutes-in-US-found-to-make-at-least-10000-a-month
In a first of its kind study by a Korean government-run institute, it found that hundreds of Korean women enter the U.S. every month to become prostitutes. While the findings may be "interesting", it does make one wonder why the government found the need to conduct such a study.
The study interviewed twenty-two Korean prostitutes and industry insiders, according to JoongAng, who worked in the U.S for four months from May of last year.
According to Jang Joon-oh, a senior researcher in charge of the project and who conducted the interviews, "the women’s American dream of a decent life turns upside down quickly."
"Many Korean sex workers don’t speak English at all, and they can’t get on the bus alone," Jang said. "It’s nearly impossible for them to live a normal life in the United States."
The interviewees said they earned at least $10,000 a month charging about $200 per hour, with nearly half of that going to their bosses.
Jang said that the women were "generally satisfied" with their earnings, but found themselves "homesick" and "feeling lonely" because of the language barrier and "other factors". Many subsequently turn to drugs or gambling.
"It’s important to determine the illegality of sex work, but we also need comprehensive research on whether Korean sex workers in the United States were exploited or have their human rights severely infringed," Jang said.
To be sure, while it might be tempting to look for sympathetic victims, it may often be the case that most if not all of these women simply do sex work for money just like any other high paying occupation.
Indeed, according to Jang's study, most of the women paid brokers $10,000 to help them into the U.S. Seven out of the 18 workers said they were smuggled into the country via Canada or Mexico. The seven, who now work in massage parlors or karaoke bars, said they hid in cars or sneaked past the U.S.-Mexico borders with other Mexicans. The other 11 said they entered the U.S. with tourist visas.
According to JoongAng, "a 36-year-old sex worker who worked in the industry in the United States for five years confessed she hid herself under the back seat of a van and illegally entered the United States from Canada. Since taking up the sex trade, she has acquired a holiday drug and gambling habit of $10,000 a day."
Some women, said the paper, came to the U.S. after seeing internet advertisements reading, "Escape recession: Looking for unni [women] who want to work in the U.S."
The respondents said they worked long hours, often more than 13 hours a day servicing seven or eight customers a day on average. Eighty percent of their cutomers were "Americans" (ie, non-Korean or non-Asian, perhaps).
The respondents said they worked more than 13 hours with seven or eight customers a day on average.
Moreover, Jang found that many workers were itinerant, frequently moving from state to state to avoid authorities. They would often start in western cities such as San Francisco or Los Angeles, Jang said, and then move eastwards to Dallas, Atlanta and New York.
"The sex business wants to lure new clients, and they prefer to switch their workers often," Jang explained.

Robert, I'm not a forum policeman, don't want to be, just a poster. But, it would be helpful if you posted a few more reviews before you tried to post a blog entry here. Especially one that tells us that "The sex business wants to lure new clients. . ."
Now that IS News!
