Thomas Sowell Quotations, A Marxist In His Youth, A Conservative Libertarian Today
My gift to any deluded individuals who are following the leftist policies of Biden, Harris, AOC, Warren, Schumer, Pelosi, et al.
Here are 16 quotations from one of my favorites, Thomas Sowell, the Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution, also known as the master of "idea density," on one of his favorite topics the "vision of the political left" and the many defects, deficiencies and imperfections of that flawed vision.
The first two quotations, about the ever-present hostility and hatred projected by so many on the far left of the political spectrum, are so true in today's world.
1. That people on the political left have a certain set of opinions, just as people do in other parts of the ideological spectrum, is not surprising. What is surprising, however, is how often the opinions of those on the left are accompanied by hostility and even hatred.
2. Anyone who studies the history of ideas should notice how much more often people on the political left, more so than others, denigrate and demonize those who disagree with them instead of answering their arguments.
3. In a sense, the political left's attempts to silence ideas they cannot, or will not, debate are a confession of intellectual bankruptcy.
4. The most fundamental fact about the ideas of the political left is that they do not work. Therefore we should not be surprised to find the left concentrated in institutions where ideas do not have to work in order to survive.
5. The political left has never understood that, if you give the government enough power to create 'social justice,' you have given it enough power to create despotism. Millions of people around the world have paid with their lives for overlooking that simple fact."
6. The whole political vision of the left, including socialism and communism, has failed by virtually every empirical test, in countries all around the world. But this has only led leftist intellectuals to evade and denigrate empirical evidence.
7. The vision of the left, full of envy and resentment, takes its worst toll on those at the bottom whether black or white who find in that paranoid vision an excuse for counterproductive and ultimately self-destructive attitudes and behavior.
8. No one can really understand the political left without understanding that they are about making themselves feel superior, however much they may talk piously about what they are going to do to help others.
9. Facts are seldom allowed to contaminate the beautiful vision of the left. What matters to the true believers are the ringing slogans, endlessly repeated. Darwinian adaptation to environment applies not only to nature but also to society. Just as you don't find eagles living in the ocean or fish living on mountain tops, so you don't find leftists concentrated where their ideas have to stand the test of performance.
10. Wherever you get enough far left people in power, you can find a similar willingness to force everyone into collectivist conformity at all costs.
11. The left is not necessarily aiming at totalitarianism. But their know-it-all mindset leads repeatedly and pervasively in that direction, even if by small steps, each of which might be called 'micro-totalitarianism. '.
12. What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people like themselves need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat.
13. Although the big word on the left is 'compassion,' the big agenda on the left is dependency. The more people who are dependent on government handouts, the more votes the left can depend on for an ever-expanding welfare state.
14. The greatest moral claim of the political left is that they are for the masses in general and the poor in particular. That is also their greatest fraud. It even fools many leftists themselves.
15. No government of the left has done as much for the poor as capitalism has. Even when it comes to the redistribution of income, the left talks the talk but the free market walks the walk. What do the poor most need? They need to stop being poor. And how can that be done, on a mass scale, except by an economy that creates vastly more wealth? Yet the political left has long had a remarkable lack of interest in how wealth is created. As far as they are concerned, wealth exists somehow and the only interesting question is how to redistribute it.
16. It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance.
And, I give one more gift to those who think Biden is doing a good job. You are in dwindling company after only six months of Biden, et al, leading this country.
Here's an article, replete with recent polling data to show that you are in dwindling company.
Biden's great slip and slide. Americans now doubt his honesty, empathy and leadership.

I'm A Poorly Uneducated White Boy
Imagine being so poorly educated about the political spectrum that you think pelosi, Biden, and Schumer are leftists and not just center right liberals. Which is what classical liberalism is and what American liberals actually are, Center-right.
I admit to not having a formal education in Political Science. My interests have traditionally been focused on engineering, science, psychology and medicine. But, to exist in today's world, one must have some appreciation of politics and its history.
I will point out that in your referring to me as: "Imagine being so poorly educated about the political spectrum", you exemplified Mr. Sowell's proposition in quotation number two. And I'm sure you also meant to describe contemporary American Liberalism as Center-Left, not Center-Right.
The term Liberalism has had a fluid meaning since its emergence in the 17th century.
Even the ideas embodied in America's Conservative movement fall under the original meaning of American Liberalism. American Liberalism took a turn to the left under Roosevelt, incorporating elements of Social Liberalism, with the passing of the New Deal and other social programs in the 1930's. It lurched further left with the passing of Johnson's Great Society programs in the 1960's. Today, it appears to be lurching further left with more social programs and intervention in Americans' everyday lives than ever. As a prime example, I offer the contentious Critical Race Theory push that is endorsed by virtually every Democrat in government. Then there is the virtually unanimous Democratic support of BLM, a clearly Marxist organization. I doubt most people read their manifesto when it was originally posted on the web. It clearly espoused at least some Marxist ideology and a few of the founders admitted they were trained Marxists.
I agree that, in years past, Biden, Pelosi and Schumer, hell most Democrats, could have been described as Center-Left and not leftist or left-leaning. Either in response to the increasingly leftward winds in the Democratic Party or, perhaps they're now free to show their true beliefs, they are pushing for evermore socially liberal programs and government intervention in everyday Americans' lives. Again, CRT is a prime example. Promoters of CRT are trying to "re-educate" American children by telling them that, if you're white, you are intrinsically guilty of being a racist, not because of anything you actually believe or have done, but because some, not all mind you, but some white people treated Blacks as property in centuries past.
Biden, Pelosi and Schumer are not the most left-leaning Democrats. Sanders, The Squad, Warren, Harris and a few others are more dangerous IMHO. But, those three are in leadership positions and they are supporting left-leaning or leftist policies, either out of fear of being un-elected or because they are believers finally willing to show their true colors.
At least that is my take on affairs.
