I have been on this board forever and try to only post useful information. I come here for intel and not to gossip or bullshit. I am a busy guy and have real friends. Comic you have not been on long and for the most part your 53 posts are garbage and provide no value to senior member.

The post below is proof. You actually had a good experience and then posted nothing about it, for example who it was, how long your visited was and the dream itself and the value of your experience. With the amount of posts you have you are already approaching senior status and that kind sucks for us seniors that provided real intel on this board about our experiences.

For everyone else, I am sorry I broke my own rule about posting non-experiences, but Comic is like that annoying person in the bar that will just not shut F the up.

If it arrives wiped, they might think it got damaged during shipping and attemp a restore to retrieve any pictures they may want. They're going to be motivated to get those. So unless you can guarantee it's irretrievably clean that not even the Deot. Of Defense can get it back, it's safer in your hands.

Pack the remainder neatly and ship it "from the university". Schools often find student's belongings in nooks and crannies, and make the effort to return it. If the return address is generic, it's quite believable that should they try to find the person that shipped it, it's plausible they will chalk it up to some unknown staff. Just make sure the shipping charges cannot be traced to you.

If it's who I think it is, then it's more than likely I have met her. My buddy has a daughter on the soccer team and I was at his house when some of the girls were over running drills in the backyard.

There's different levels of 'wiping,' and unless that happens to be your area of professional expertise I wouldn't risk that yourself. And the family may hold on to it for years, maybe no one tries to do a recovery on it now. But then someone like a tech savvy nephew learns about the laptop and starts looking into getting the data back. You never know what advances will come along in forensic data recovery down the road that will enable someone to get around even the most stringent wiping techniques known today.

I'd destroy the hard drive. You should be able to get to it pretty easily, just a few mini screws on the underside in most models. Go to a Home depot or something and show one of the guys the screw holes to help you find the right head kit. Or take it into a place like microcenter and have a tech pop it out for you while you wait there at the desk. Then take a hammer to the hard drive before throwing it in the trash. Donate the rest of the laptop, or just throw that away separately too.

Some models don't allow that to be done easily, if at all. But if it is doable, swap it out. People will think it got corrupted, and they may even try doing data recovery. But you can't recover what was never there. (Do it yourself. Repair shops are required to log serial numbers for tracking and reporting in case they get a stolen laptop.).

Now, with all that said, the ethics of denying family momentos as irreplaceable as photographs would weigh on me. The flipside is possibly saving them from knowing everything their loved one was doing. The videos made with her SD might not be the only videos made. There might be others; other SDs, boyfriends, material for a secret * account. She's open to making videos with her SD; who is to say she's not open to making them with others?

I don't envy the person who has to make that call. There is no good decision. Just different bad ones. It sucks all around.

Lots of newer models also have SSD memory chips that offer quick storage in addition to the standard hard drive. If you are not a total IT guy, trash the entire thing. No amount of overwriting or drilling can protect against dedicated recovery on a SSD.

For everyone who's been trying to get in touch with kaylove / Kelsie she is out of the hobby and is engaged and pregnant.

Apple photos should automatically backup to icloud, so the photos should already be in that account if it makes your friend feel better. If not and your friend knew of photos, had access to the photos, a thumb drive at Microcenter is wicked cheap and a padded mailer works. For a return address, they could use the Cincinnati post office on Dalton and a pseudonym name J. Smith. Also once an SSD has been wiped a few times, they are virtually impossible to recover info from. You can dod wipe an SSD but that destroys the longevity of said drive. If they really want to be sure, tell them to perform a NEW install of MacOS, encrypt the entire drive using filevault, and reinstall MacOS again, formating the drive without unencrypting it and reinstall MacOS again, then reencrypt the entire drive a final time. There is zero chance of recovery at that point. IT security is my field, and forensic recovery a specialty.
