I mean, it's certainly good advice to always err on the side of caution, but I'd like to believe that there are SOME providers who are genuinely honest, trustworthy people. You mentioned Amber, and I would definitely consider her in that category. Kelli (the one who almost retired recently) also strikes me as being very reliable and trustworthy. There's another provider who I have several years of history with and have gotten to know on a more personal level. I've given her rides places, after giving her the donation.
