He went to three AMSs. That is not random
I hope you folks don't mind another out of stater offering his thoughts on this issue. I came by here mostly looking for an answer to the question of what the female customer was doing at an AMP. I thank Wiseacre and BBInsider for providing an answer.
According to the sheriff, the shooter says he was fighting temptation. He was raised as a fundamentalist Baptist and was active in the church as a youth. My speculation is that he learned a lot of guilt around sex and could not deal with his own needs. That should tell us something about society that is worthy of contemplation. I don't think it is enough just to dismiss this as the act of one crazy guy.
But the fact remains that he targeted Asian sex workers, when there are so many types of sex workers that he could have gone after. Why the AMPs. From what has been in the paper, it sounds like he went to AMPs to get his release. So, no, he did not go hunting random Asians, he picked Asians who were associated in his mind with his sexual compulsion and his guilt. Did he fetishize Asian women, which I've seen occasionally in posts in these fora? And why is there this specialized industry of AMPs, while at least in parts of the country I am familiar with, most other types of massage parlors offering sexual release have been driven out of business. Why have the AMPs survived and flourished? It is clearly not because they dominate the sex industry. On the streets, in strip clubs, in the escort fields, Asian women are in the minority. What is is about massage business that has enabled them to dominate? I don't have the answer, I'm just asking questions, trying to find a more nuanced way of thinking about this situation other than the extremes of "Asians were killed so it was obviously racist" on the one hand, and the idea that raising race is twisting the issue.
To close, the one thing that did strike me as most racist was the way the sheriff spoke, displaying so much understanding of the poor white kid who could not deal with his sexual urges while showing so little concern for the victims. Now, you can prove me wrong on this if you can show me clips of him reacting the same way to a shooting by a black kid.
First, I haven't been on these boards in years but I use to participate and this was the first place I decided to look for news. Second, this whole thing was a senseless killing of innocent people by a crazy guy. Third, I want to respectfully challenge all of the hate crime sentiment that is being thrown around. Again, this guy was a crazy guy who I have no doubt was motivated by the industry and whatever weird temptations he felt. If he was gay and these were gay spas with homosexual men who were shot, that would be called a hate crime. If this industry was Hispanic, it would be called a hate crime. If it was white women, it would be called a misogynistic hate crime. Correlation is not causation. If he hated asians, he would have gone to Buford highway and shot up a flea market or a Ramen noodle shop. This was Spa specific and spas happen to be run by Asian women. Why does everything have to be twisted to prove there is hatred in this country?
There going to Shut down All the Spas and Massage Parlors just watch

Hate Crime. Against Sex Workers

Where else can a loner get a release for $100 or less? True that it's probably not right to dismiss the kid as just crazy. He was certainly driven to guilt by our puritanical society and his Baptist upbringing. I don't want to knock the Church because it serves a purpose but the reality is that the US has stigmatized sex workers for centuries and that certainly added to this guys guilt. The real hate crime was against sex workers in my opinion. That message doesn't serve left wing (or even right wing) America, but that's the truth. He killed these women because he went to these spas and couldn't control himself or his guilt. He felt guilty b / c our society says he is supposed to feel guilty. Same reason he was going to Florida to shoot up the porn industry. If he had more money and was seeing white Atlanta dominatrixes (who are $350/ hr and thus not as convenient to this guy) he would have shot them instead. Again, his hatred was 100% for sex workers, AND NOT Asians. If we want to say it was a hate crime, let's get the hate right and point the finger at a country that has stigmatized sex workers. That will never happen though. Instead, the liberal media has another great sound byte to spread the continual fertilizing of its self serving fallacy that we all hate each other in America.
