When the hobby works as it should, the upside is that it allows consenting adults to satisfy their economic (for the providers) and physical (for the clients) needs without hurting anyone. The worst negative aspects involve the possibility of exploitation and trafficking of those who are not willing participants. And a milder downside is the propensity for both providers and clients look at each other purely as commodities. For many providers that is the attitude that leads to contempt and viewing clients as nothing more than a cash source. But there are two sides to that equation and many clients are equally guilty as they view providers as nothing more than shapely bits of meat from which to extract the maximum amount of pleasure for the minimum cost.
In looking at the issues of service and attitude, there are providers who provide bad service and have contempt for clients; there are those who provide good service even though they may have contempt for clients; and thankfully there are also those who provide good service and don't have contempt for clients. But the bottom line is that it's hard to assign percentages based on anecdotal evidence such as "John School" and provider postings, since those can reasonably be expected to skew to the negative.
The reason I started this post by saying it's all relative is because, no matter how the distribution of good vs bad attitude / service breaks down, everything (for both provider and client) depends on their individual approach to the hobby. For example, providers who do more screening, are more selective or just have a more positive attitude may tend to get better clients and thereby be less exposed to bad experiences leading to contempt. On the hobbyist side, those who more homework and stick to well-reviewed providers will have more positive outcomes than clients who simply roll the dice.
In summary, I still hold to my earlier point that there are a wide variety of experiences out there and it's possible for a hobbyist to maximize the positive ones (both in service and attitude) by using resources like this forum, learning from experience and applying some common sense effort. After you've been doing this for a while and know what to look for, it can seem like you're batting (close to) 1. 000, but all it really means is that you've learned how to swing at pitches that are in the zone.

Guys who just swing because they like the pix in the ad are going to get burned on nasty curves and sliders.
