It's quite possible many of them have debts in their past that they have to pay off-- tickets, fines, car loans, payday loans, 'protection' with the local gang, whatever.
They can't deal with the government because of warrants, so no welfare, no food stamps. Even if they don't have warrants, they still get asked nosy questions about what their job is, where they get their money, that kind of thing. The government doesn't care THAT much about whoring, but they're damned if they let people get away without paying their taxes.
If they're really trying hard to take care of their kids-- and most of them do legit care about their kids-- they might even be trying to pony up for a decent daycare or school. And, let's not forget-- health care takes money. Mega bucks money. This isn't exactly a trade where your employer provides insurance. They get the clap, not only do they have to take a few weeks off and lose money, they have to pay (up front, remember!) for the doctor visit and the medicine. One of their kids breaks an arm, they have to go to the ER, get charged for that on top of everything else. And before you say 'but they could go on Medicaid', remember-- they can't deal with the government. Unless they want to sign the kids over to Grandma or something-- and I imagine a lot do that so Grandma can draw welfare on their benefit-- they're really on their own.
Some girls-- not a whole lot, but some-- might do escorting as a side line. That only lasts until the first bust, though. It's a pretty guaranteed way of getting fired from the regular job so fast your head spins. The regular job also limits the amount of time you have available to escort, and makes it so the escort has to run *really* under the radar. It only takes one nosy coworker or a mean former customer to ruin their lives. And once they get busted a few times or have warrants out, yeah, forget doing anything over the table. Escorting is going to be pretty much the only thing available unless Daddy owns a restaurant or something.
Basically what it amounts to is, yeah, they make decent money. IF they're lucky, or good. And most of it is going to hemorrhage straight out of their pockets because they got to live like everybody else, but they're kinda screwed when it comes to legit living. The only girls in this business who actually make serious money are the ones who charge $500 a hour and upwards, meet people at the Hilton or Marriott, and have professional photos on their website. Your average Backpage girl? Not so much.
Normal people on the other hand. Might only make so many bucks a hour. But that's work 5 days a week, 4-8 hours a day (often enough more than that), and a check every two weeks like clockwork (or whenever your job pays, if you're self-employed), plus whatever benefits you draw from your work, plus credit, plus *stability*. There's no desperation / dread at all because they have a line of guys waiting to open doors and wipe their ass; and these guys range from a few alpha male stereotypical Chads to a huge pile of blah-beta provider types. This is the goal and result of 3 decades of Western feminism: neuter masculinity from the earliest stages of boyhood so that women will have a veritable harem of men in attendance (irony, that), begging to be shackled into marriage / servitude in the hopes that reward sex will be dished out not-too-infrequently if they keep the lawn nice and let her buy a new pair of shoes a few times a month to wear out on her weekly girls' night.
The hottest upper 50% of American women simply don't have to work that hard to find a desirable mate (talk more about "desirability" another time). They don't have to work AT ALL. So poof, they're gone, out of the potential provider pool almost from day 1. The remainder are chasing that ideal and would never do something as "low" as sex work, whether because of moral conditioning or just the prevailing social penalty that still exists around such work. Except for those that are fucked up (drugs, mental issues, etc) or are dog-ass ugly by majority standards. Hotties may rattle around in the former group just by the (bad) luck of the draw, but the latter group can only hope to cater to whatever fetish interests they've lucked into having (Hugh Jass, jumbo juggs, etc). The dog ugly ones that *don't* have any fetish angle to play end up becoming the value providers who'd still better be able to suck a golf ball through a garden hose if they want any clients.
This dynamic isn't nearly as strong in eastern Europe and certainly not in Asian countries, if it exists at all. Men simply aren't trained from childhood to put up with that bullshit structure, so they don't. Consequently, women have to work to lock a good mate into marriage because the males hold most of the cards in that dynamic: there's no prevailing social conditioning that says men or women "should get married", so the incentives fall back to basic human wiring. Men DON'T want to lock down because, let's face it, there ain't no pussy like new pussy. Women DO want to get married because they want kids, and a secure family structure in which to raise them is far far more appealing for all the obvious reasons. This completely different dynamic leads to a whole slew of secondary / follow-on / trickle-down effects. One of which, I believe, is that sex work is considered much more acceptable (given the roles that women are expecting to fill / play) socially, so even hotter women are more willing to consider it as a viable option, temporarily or as a good ongoing living.
