You can get a Google Voice NUMBER for each email address, that is, unlimited. You need to link the GV number to a real number only once, like verification. You just need to buy a SIM starter kid compatible with your phone network or an unlocked phone. I did it recently for $5 each, ouch. In the past, it's almost free for like a dollar. It's a one-off. Google doesn't take away your GV number even if there is no phone linked to it. They only take it away for recycling if you don't use it for a year (They will warn you before recycling it.

The problem is, Google has already taken out all the carrier features in Hangout, no SMS, no voice call. It may be new regulation or the other carriers won't allow it. Google still have to make deals with other carriers. Google sell phones and their project-Fi is hosted by T-mobile and others.

But there is no problem when Google is the carrier. So Hangout still has SMS and voice calling on Project-Fi. There's no plan to discontinue those in Hangout. Fi isn't a bad plan. You pay $80 for unlimited everything, up to 15 G of 4 G data, slower data after that. The data charge is local in many countries. You only need a Google phone to activate the plan. After that the SIM works on any T-mobile phone, locked or unlocked. You also have 10 free data-only SIM that also works on any locked or unlocked T-mobile phone. You have a 10 phone group plan with 15 G shared.

The other option is VOIP apps. Callcentric has call and recently SMS for less than a few dollars a month.

But HO is pretty good on Android and iOS. You can have your personal number, business number, home number, regular number, hooker number, sugar number and craiglists number on the same phone with seamless notifications. It's free except for the one-off verification. Multiple lines on the same phone are there since the 2 G standard but no carrier ever supported it.

Thanks for the clarification. I should have been more clear. Google has limited the number of Google Voice numbers I can link to my real phone number. Guess I shouldn't be too greedy. I already have two hooker phones. One for real hookers and the other for long-term 'friendships' .

I like your idea of using Google Hangouts instead of Google Voice though.
