Point out that the recent phone call Trump made to Georgia shows that he cared nothing about fraud, but simply wanted to "find those 11,700 votes" so he could overturn the election -- nothing. Point out that those oft-cited "evidences" of fraud -- I. E. , the 5,000 dead voters in Georgia -- were investigated and shown to be wrong (as the GOP secretary of state calmly pointed out, there were 2 -- yes, 2 -- suspicious votes), and they'll sputter and move on to their next fantasy point. Point out that William Barr said that there was no evidence of fraud or irregularities that would have changed the outcome of the race, and the man they had praised as Trump's strong ally is suddenly a captive of the Deep State. The problem was they underestimated his abilities as the Idiot-Whisperer. If McConnell takes Trump out, it's because he has no choice. Not doing so would be worse than doing so. But make no mistake, this will not sit well with the MAGAt Qanon club. And they make up the difference between a competitive GOP and a non-competitive GOP.
But not taking trump out via impeachment conviction in the Senate would also have dire consequences for McConnell and the GOP. He would be letting a guy off the hook that close to 60% of the country want's removed immediately. And he'd be letting him off the hook for the second time.
It's like choosing between getting kicked in the balls or socked in the face. Both are going to hurt.
