If you have someone you can call to come and get your car, the cops won`t impound it. If you don`t have someone to call, or don`t feel like explaining to someone WHY the cops have your vehicle, they will impound it. At one time the cops had the authority to actually confiscate your vehicle. But too many people were being arrested while driving a car that belonged to someone else who had no idea their car was being used to give a nice young lady a ride home. Some people were actually arrested while driving a vehicle that belonged to their employer. Not sure if that law was overturned, or simply not applied to cases involving misdemeanor offenses.
