I often have $10 k+ in my hotel room when gambling someplace but I keep most of it in the safe. If they were strong enough and able to beat the shit out of me enough, they would have a nice score. Having said that, I usually take the minimum amount in one pocket and an additional $1 in another pocket when visiting a provider just in case my second brain takes over and compels me to spend more.

Perhaps my wording wasn't completely clear but I never said that it was the stranger's hotel room (although that certainly would have been even more foolish on his part). I said bringing cash in with him (as in, when checking into a hotel room) and meeting a stranger in a hotel room (whether returning with her there or having her come to him). I understand people need cash when they travel (which is why they have ATM's where one can withdraw smaller amounts of cash as needed). I also understand there are much rarer cases (such as when gambling) where one would need to hold such large sums as this guy (btw, Titusville is hardly a hotbed for casinos). But if I were holding such a large amount: a) I probably wouldn't risk bringing a hooker to the same room or b) if I did, I think I could find a much more secure or hard to find place to stash it than a sock drawer.

And yes those hotel safes are a joke. I very recently had one of those thing give me an error message and lock me out for thirty minutes. When I tried again another error, called the front desk and the guy opened it in 5 minutes or less.

I just recently learned of the ease of cracking cheap electronic safes so my strategy around that will likely change. When I travel someplace cheap like Panama City or Bogota (gambling or not), I normally get a nice room for myself and a cheaper room for entertaining so that they can't track me down later. The cheaper room has only the minimum necessary for mongering.

How about stuffed in an envelope taped under a drawer? Or lifting up a heavy item of furniture and stashing it under that? Plus splitting it up into 2 or more seperate bundles to at least make it more likely that you wouldn't lose more than half. Better yet, if you're at a place where you need to hold such HUGE sums of cash (such as for gambling or, as I suspect might be in this guy's case, completing drug deals) should you really be adding to your risk at all by bringing any more questionable characters than you have to (such as a hooker) into what is essentially your sanctuary.
