I think it was supposed to be semi-cryptic to protect against LE by saying out right how much you paid. No conventional ways of listing dollars, and if you did read it as conventional, it would look like it read under the value of a dollar.

I don't care one way or another. But, I don't understand why so many people have trouble with it. Personaly I prefer, for example: 1.0 or 1.4 or .4, etc.--no dollar sign nor mention of money. Nothing proceeds it to say that you're talking about money, when listed as .4/1.2 at the end of a review, everyone knows what it means. Say $40/$120 is pretty obvious you're discussing money exchanging hands on a publically accessed board.
