Arguably provider references do provide the ladies with some measure of security from being busted and knowing that they aren't seeing creeps or weirdos so I can't fault them with that. Years ago when I was primarily seeing ladies off those defunct boards, I jumped through those hoops also.

The problem is, girls retire and most of us guys can't afford to see escorts AT THOSE RATES nearly as often. I totally agree the private boards are better for the ladies but what about us? A guy pays a premium for alleged safety only to find that his date advertises on backpage or other public places which means he can be caught up in a bust.
