That turns out to be exactly backwards: the Feds were looking into Spitzer (because of "suspicious money transfers"--they say), and he led them to the Emperor's Club. The managers and staff of the club were the ones who were "in the wrong place at the wrong time".
Actually it was Spitzer's actions that got him caught. He was transferring money around improperly so that it looked like money laundering. Banks are required to report suspicious activity to FinCEN. FinCEN shares info with the IRS which affirmed that the activity looked as though it were attempts to conceal monies. IRS presented the info to the FBI which realized it was part of the investigation already ongoing into the Emperors Club VIP.
Spitzer would have been nailed either way. If he had simply put the charges on his Visa or wired the money directly (and used a non-traceable cell) he may not have actually been caught. The tryst would have happened and only he and his special lady would have known.
Ah.... my bad then. I'll have to do some more reading on this tonight. Damn work getting in the way of my staying accurate on the gossip ;)
