I always get there early, drive around the hotel, look to see if anyone suspicious is in parked cars by the doors. If it doesn't feel tight, I call say I can't make it and leave or reschedule. Once inside, I always do a room check, the bathroom, shower curtain etc. After you get to know someone, a house is my preference. I do a casual look around but not as intense.
