While it's easy to rationalize that future visits are in the plan, as a practical matter it never works out to the mongers advantage. Just don't do it. Providers do this because it works often enough. The only defense is to honor the time / donation deal that you made in the first place but stay away from the banking business. I've adopted a cash only approach so that electronic transfers aren't even possible and it shuts down that sort of dynamic. Draw the uncrossable lines and respect them regardless of the story du joir. You'll hear a lot of them and it is tactical, not genuine circumstantial most of the time.

All you guys out there with any handyman experience know how much it sucks when you fan belt breaks on your home AC unit in the evening. LOL.

The first two times this happened I agreed and never had a chance to make another visit. Repeated requests came so quickly I knew I was never going to break even, and the requests were going to perpetuate. So, I broke off contact.

There was one recently that I was able to visit after the first request for help. She asked if it could be used to cover the donation for the next visit. I agreed. Within a very short time she contacted me and asked for a visit. She asked if we could do half this visit and half the next visit. I agreed. The previous visits were HR for $. 8. I was always there between fifty minutes to just over an hour and was a great time for me.

So, on this first visit I left $. 2 (donation and tip). The visit wasn't nearly as good as the previous visits. Somewhat rushed and she was walking me to the door right at thirty minutes. Maybe it was half time now, half time later? I kind of doubt that. About a week later she calls and asks for me to visit. Ok, maybe she was having an off day and this visit will be alright. If anything, better than the last visit, right? Wrong. I left the same donation and tip as the first repayment visit. This session was so rushed, and I was in and out the door in fifteen minutes.

So, half donation for half time then half donation for a quarter of the time. The math didn't work out for me. The half I got was half assed and the only full I got was fully screwed.

Well, since the line was successfully traversed why not try it again. Not long after help was requested once again. I agreed but this time I was kind of turned off by it. Not all that eager to visit again. Probably because subconsciously, I knew this cycle would turn into a self-eating watermelon. Oh, if you are wondering if they contacted me to stop by since I had credit? Never happened. It is just like helping any family or friend out. You don't hear from them anymore. There are people out there that do have integrity and are anxious to clear the books so to speak, but they make up only a very small percentage in my experience.

After this time, I looked back and thought about where things went off the rails for me. I looked at it from both the provider as well as me from any other client's point of view, which helped me put in a prospective so that I would know what to do to try to minimize this from happening and what to do the next time it happens.

When a provider asks a client for help it goes two different ways: the client refuses, or the client agrees.

Of the clients who refuse I believe most of them would be put off by this request and not only refuse to help but also not visit them again. Of the smaller number of clients that agreed to help, a large percentage would probably feel disappointed on the next visit I. E. , a little something extra wasn't in with the visit for all their troubles. Therefore, they would probably not visit anymore.

For the clients that agreed to help and were content with the following visit (s), I would say nearly all would be asked for help again since the provider stepped over the line and back successfully. Eventually, by means of frequency or the amount requested, all these clients will fall in line with the clients who refused originally.

The result from all the scenarios I was able to come up with is that the client will stop visiting the requesting provider.

This must be clearly obvious to the providers that have done this to other clients in the past.

Asking a repeat client for help equals a former client.

So, why do they do this to me then? The reason is irrelevant to me. It is the eventual result. Either they don't want me as a client or at best, they are willing to take a chance at losing me as a repeat client. It is that simple. For everyone knows or should know, you "don't shit where you eat. ".

All the instances that this has happened to me, frequent repeat was one of the common factors. So, if I do repeat, there will be some time between visits. Now, I believe the few that I had this experience with represents only a small percentage, it is just something I do now. Secondly, instead of me allowing the line to be pushed until it reaches the cliff, I have now moved the cliff to the line. For now, I know now that if a provider asks me for that for that type of help, they no longer want or care to have me as a repeat client.

Now, the one scenario that I don't have experience with is when a client refuses to help and then attempts or does visit again after the request and refusal. How does did it go? Did it work out?

Enjoy the Journey.[/QUOTE]As someone who is currently feeling the sharper edge of the sword that OneWayOut is talking about I can tell you that the advancement that you are willing to give them to help them with their unforeseen circumstances should be given with the idea that you want to help and not the idea that future services will be rendered with more enthusiasm. Cash is king and once the Queen has it the King is no longer needed! There's nothing wrong with being a generous person though and as long as you can afford the lost you will find that it will quickly identify a unicorn from a Chimera. A very smart person told me one time that the only true way you will know if someone is worth investing in is to give them the opportunity to prove that they aren't. I've Always considered my early donations to be their opportunity to do just that.

BTW around 85% of them have been identified as Chimera!

Agree with everyone who says never advance any cash at any time that has been my poicy for years and and I stick to it. My commone response when I am asked, and I have been as ked a few times is as follows: "Gee, that's funny your asking for an advance because I was going to ask you to let me have this visist on credit and I will pay you next time, is that cool?" Well, the look an their faces when I ask that question is hilarious, the few times it has happened they start fumbling for words and then a weak no comes out and the subject is dropped. Of course I pay them and go on my way. BTW the few that asked in every case I have revisted several times with no issues.
