You do not have to show police your identification in California unless you are being lawfully detained or arrested. Unlike some other states, California does not have a "stop and identify" statute that makes it a crime to refuse to identify yourself.

Thank god I had $20 I didn't tip, receptionist let me call a cab, then I showed up randomly at my girlfriend's at the times parents house and got a ride back to my place from her brother, then had to take the train back down the next day to get my car out of impound, which was an absolute nightmare given my wallet and cell phone were both in the car.

I could of course ask them, am I being detained / arrested?

Other than that, to the best of my knowledge, you refuse to I'd yourself (and no wallet D / L in the room) - they have got nothing.
