Some WiFis will give you the DNS of the internet provider or modem they are connected to, and some have been set to go to other DNS servers. Some DNSs subscribe to a "naughty black list" and refuse to give you the IP address and / or make connections for sites on that list. Many hotels and free public WiFi systems do this.
On your macbook (and maybe your tablet), you can tell the system not to use the DNS servers the WiFi wants to give you, but the ones you program yourself.
