One thing I will say is that never second guess those Spidey Senses! If it feels sketchy to you, do what you did and back off. With time and experience one will be able to hone those senses. So always trust your gut. I think too many guys think this is an easy skill and are not careful in their approach, nor realize it takes some time & effort to get 'goof' at it. So sounds like you are on the right track.

It's the little things you mention. Things that another guy could only know by actually dating the girl that let guys know they can trust you. Bits of shared knowledge.
