It is shorter and cheaper when you do not take the tunnel to a strip properties. Tell the taxi driver "do not to take you through the tunnel". Police have been cracking down and fining the drivers. So are they crooks- No. Are they taking advantage of you- Yes.

With that said, Similar thing is happening when they take you to a strip joint or AMP. They will charge you regular taxi fare and add in your tip. Then they will get their kickback for driving you there And trust me it is more than the taxi fare and tip combined. Many strip joints now offer free limo service. So do your homework and call the place first.

If heading to an AMP, via taxi: again, do your homework. Find a restaurant in the vicinity of your AMP. Tell the taxi driver your going to XYZ restaurant and give them that address. (Disclaimer: If your going late, restaurants are closed you'll have to find a better 'destination' like a bar.) When the taxi driver drops you off make sure he drives away. One time I saw him stick around waiting for me to walk into the AMP. If that happens he will go into the AMP (after your in the room) and ask for his kickback. Which means your HE will be at least 1 big bill. If you must, go in to your 'destination' until he is gone and then walk over to the AMP.

They know this which is why they'll usually make up some BS about how there's construction going on and it will end up costing more if they don't take the tunnel. The really clever ones will ask if you want them to take the "quickest" way to your hotel, which means the freeway. You won't find out until later that "quickest" is not the same as "cheapest": depending on traffic and the timing of the lights the freeway actually is quicker in some cases, but it will always be more expensive. If you say nothing and they take the tunnel anyway, it is 100% illegal and they are absolutely crooks if they do it. The bright side is that if they do this you can easily get your ride for free. When you get to your hotel after being longhauled, get your bags out and then immediately call the Nevada Cab Authority (the number will always be posted somewhere in the cab, usually on the windshield). The driver isn't going to stick around and wait to be fined, especially if he knows he's in the wrong, and he's not going to try anything with hotel staff and security all over the place. So he'll peel out before you can report his number and you just got the fare waived.

And yes, never take advice from cabbies about which AMP to go to, unless you want to make a list of places to avoid. I usually like to find nearby casinos since it's less suspicious for a tourist to visit those than a local bar (why would you be going there when there's places to drink all over the Strip and downtown?) and the casinos are going to be open 24/7.
