In fact no mask is going to provide 95% protection. So in the scientific community, unless something meets a threshold or 95% effective then one can not say it works! So when early on the "experts" warned not to wear a mask it was from this perspective, that because it is not 95% effective, it doesn't work. But that ignores the practical aspect.
But what if wearing a mask reduces your chances of contracting something by 60% or 70%? Is that effective? Would that help stem the tide of the epidemic? I think the recent research shows that the severity of a COVID infection is directly related to how many SARS-COVID-19 particles one inhales. So if a mask reduces the number of particles inhaled, isn't that a benefit? So wearing a mask might not be 95% effective but if it reduces your chances by 70% or means you will have only a minor case, well isn't that useful? It is! But again a scientist can't advise one to use it because it isn't 95% effective. Also governments are loath to advise something unless it is 95% effective as people will follow that advice and still get sick and then blame the advice. It is a messed up situation that brought bad advice to the forefront.
As far as products with safety warnings on them, this is a result of lawyers. If the don't put such a warning then someone is going to use the mask, get infected and then sue the company. Hey, your product didn't protect me! So they warn you it isn't 100% effective. But again, if it reduces your risk, why not?
Oh and now Dr Fauci notes that early on he was afraid there would be a run on and-95 masks by the public and none would be available to healthcare workers, so he advised against using masks! Now he admits that was wrong advice.
Isn't science and politics nice? SIGH!
One can cherry pick scientific reports or websites to suit one's beliefs. There are papers on any side of this debate. Its like wearing a condom while dating hookers. You are free to chose the level of risk you take. Just don't be surprised if you catch something if you avoid protective measures.
