But this ad is different. There is no obvious way the poster makes money. You email them; they reply with some useless crap; but no money changes hands. What's the point?

A big enough list can be sold for marketing purposes or used to send other BS spam in hopes of collecting money off that.
Sending out the useless message validates it is an actual address because they do not get an undeliverable message back
