Have you ever been walking through a hotel like Embassy Suites or something like that when you were going to meet a girl and had one of the hotel staff stop you and ask you if you needed help with anything and what you were doing? If they press it I say I'm visiting a friend from out of town. And leave it at that. If there in the hall when the door opens, I act like I'm seeing a long lost friend. "hey Susie! How are you! I just forgot something in my room and head right to the elevator or stairs. " If they're in the hallway when I'm waiting by the door I just knock and wait for the door to open and say "Thanks I forgot my key card" or whatever the hotel uses. Not hard to determine after looking at the doors.

But then my brain takes over and says, "They're not interested in you unless you look like you don't belong. " If you act like you know where you're going (it always helps if the girl tells you where the elevator is), you're unlikely to be asked anything. I never have been.

Straight for the room and on a fake call they never say anything outside of a greeting.
