Turning off GPS won't help
I'm a really cautious guy but I have never considered turning off my primary phone (w geolocation turned on always) as I just leave it in the car. Great tip!
Play safe, Greg.
Cellular carriers can triangulate your location with good accuracy whenever your phone is turned on. Turning on GPS increases accuracy, but in a city with many cell towers the triangulation can be within a few feet of the true location. So, just keep it turned off.
Triangulation works for all cell phones, not just smartphones. Your hobby phone will be tracked too, but if you set it up correctly it will have no personal info tying it to you. There are a couple of other hobby phone anonymity clues that I prefer not to share in a public forum.
Also, don't use your smartphone as a GPS to get location info for a meeting. Use a standalone GPS if needed, then wipe the history.
I would also suggest using a search engine other than Google on any device; it likes to add display ads based on your search term history. I was a mite embarassed recently when my PC kept showing ads for the hotel where I last met Lilly Whyte!
Re: GreenDot money-card's, ( other security issues)
The scam potential enters the picture if a provider demands the card info prior to a meeting; if you are merely handing her the card during the meeting, then it would appear to present no risk. _ A trusted provider I know uses these for all her hobby expenses; a prepaid card is less of a red flag to a hotel clerk than a stack of Benjamins. _ Similarly, a prepaid card is easier to keep secure and hidden if they are concerned about being ripped off by a customer.
Both very good valid points, & very smart precautions to be aware of!
They may also believe that it might be easier for LEO to show proof of payment if they deal in cash.
This idea is as mistaken as the idea that "if you ask the person if they are an under-cover cop they have to tell you that they are" is of any use whatsoever for avoiding arrest! Once someone agrees {or offers} to exchamge anything of commercial, financial, or monetary value for any sex-act or for any genital-contact / sexual-contact they have already committed the crime of prostitution (or solicitation-of-prostitution in the case of the client accepting an offer or offering any exchange-of-value for sex)
Probably more reasons too, more member input appreciated! -Jeepster1
As to the other issues about tracking the clients cell'phone or identifying him from hotel-surveillance-camera-recordings: if your spouse is suspicious enough to hire any private-investigator with the wherewithal to accomplish that then you're already in more trouble than you can survive! As for being identified because of an investigation of some serious crime that occurs in the hotel / motel around the time of your app't, or of being "back-traced" by tracking the purchase of the refill on the money-card confiscated from your provider by L' E' O's: if you are that worried about that miniscule & remote of a risk perhaps you should RE-evaluate your choice of provider! I personally prefer OUT-calls because I feel like I'm at much less risk if I control the location & the access! I'm not having any "traffic" to & from my room to draw any unwanted attention!
Re: paranoia: focus on close large risks, not remote UN-likely threats.
I worked for many years doing high level security after I retired from the Army. There are lots of misconceptions about legal issues, safety measures, etc. _ I would be far more concerned with a girl and / or pimp trying to rip you off, or worse.
But it is amazing how many guys seem to be more worried about the possibility of being involved with any L' E' O' investigation, or being "outed" by their "hobbying" being made public knowledge, than they are about the possibility of being assaulted + robbed!
As well as a set up sting. LEO is not going to have a team of hackers tracking you or send out the drones with hellfires for us.They are just going to set up a sting, post some BP ads and allow the weaker members of the herd to cull themselves. _ That being said, there is no harm in being paranoid in this hobby.
But how many guys will risk blindly walking into some "notel"motel-room or an apartment or house in some "hinky" neighborhood, where god-knows-who could be hiding in the bathroom or around a corner or behind a big piece of furniture, just because they couldn't find any bad reviews of the ad on here + they talked on the 'phone to some "nice"sounding female-voice?
