Money can buy companionship, and sex, no doubt, but not love. In fact, if anything it probably chips away at the possibility of great sex, if for no other person because it implies having sex with the same person over and over (and I don't know about you guys but that takes most of the fun out of it for me).

Love also doesn't guarantee happiness. You can love someone and be completely miserable. Many parents love their kids but can't wait for them to grow up and gain some level of independence so they can have a life again.

To me, however, it's satisfying in a different way. Comparing an emotional investment to a financial one, just for a brief example: If I go on a vacation for a week and spend a few thousand dollars, I get some amount of pleasure out of it all but the pleasure ends after I return home. Maybe I have some memories or photos or whatever of the experience, but for the most part it is money out the window. If I take that same few thousand dollars and throw it into an investment or savings, etc, I get some satisfaction knowing that the money was not wasted, will most likely be worth a lot more in the future than it is today and will almost certainly come in handy having not been wasted on something so temporary as a vacation.

Sex is like that for me. Not that anyone should accept academic psychological theories without questioning them, but just from a logical standpoint those who make studying human behavior their life goal (like Abraham Maslow) probably have more of the answers than those who don't. Basically his theory was that nobody can progress up the hierarchy to social needs (like a long term relationship) if they are struggling to meet basic needs (food / water / sex / etc). If you're always struggling to get one of the lower-hierarchy needs met, you're too busy / preoccupied to worry about the higher needs like finding a life partner. What Maslow did not address (to the best of my knowledge) is that once you progress up the hierarchy and some of the higher needs are met, you still have this inner craving to dip down into the lower needs once in a while that is always knocking at the door. Maybe it's the human's way of telling you to keep your lower-rung hunting skills sharp incase some of the higher-rungs collapse and your world comes tumbling down?

In fact the urges were so great that I think I would have always been somewhat dissatisfied in my marriage until I pursued those urges.

These days it's a bit different. As much as I do crave the variety, I don't have the need to pursue risk just for the sake of risk, because I have so many years of it under my belt that there is kind of a "been there, done that" feeling. And as you said, my relationship is very rewarding in itself, so I have very little motivation to do anything that would threaten it.

The only time I get weak is when she has to travel to deal with family matters, I get a sudden sense of boredom and not knowing what to do with myself, then my mind starts to work in adventurous ways. I decide to travel to some new area just for a change of scenery and to cure the boredom, and since nobody knows me in that area, why not have a nice young piece of ass on my arm at the same time? Aside from that I actually have very little desire or motivation to cheat on her.
