Marriage isn't bad, but be careful
I've never been married. Is it really this bad?
On marriage:
Don't believe the hype, good or bad. The fact is I know many couples who are (on the surface, at least) happily married and finding a way to make it work after 10,20, 50 years. If half of marriages fail, half succeed, if by "success" one means "sticking together. ".
Now, some of the negativity is true. I was married for over a decade and the jokes about sex stopping once the marriage starts. Well, that actually happened. It took me a long time to face the reality that divorce was the only way out.
What do I miss?
I miss the togetherness that we had. I miss being able to rely on someone if I needed an errand run or had a bad day. I miss the familial gatherings at holidays.
But I don't miss her. I don't know if I'll ever trust a woman again. I look at personal ads these days and all I see is a list of boxes for her to tick when it comes to evaluating a guy. It just leaves me exhausted.
Each sex has their list of wants. Us guys want our gals to be dazzling arm candy, a firecracker in the sheets (5 nights a week), a cook, cleaner, deferential, respectful. She wants financial stability. She wants the man to be strong, brave, smart, good earner, looks good, smells good, good conversationalist, makes her laugh, and. Most important of all.
You mustn't forget this-.
She wants children.
I'm convinced now that numerous women essentially want a sperm donor who makes six figures. Once the marriage license is signed and the kids are on the way, she very well could turn off on you.
That does not happen in every marriage. If you're as eager for kids as she is, that's great. But be on guard. One author of Thailand sex tourism books says that maybe you should think about marriage in your late forties when you've had all the bedroom activity with all the sweet hot young things you could ever possibly want, and then, with your very last vaginal ejaculation, impregnate the woman you married.
None of the horror stories or rueful storytelling should discourage you from marriage. Just look around carefully at your friends' marriages and ask yourself if they're happy. Ask yourself if you're willing to trade your independence for a shot at love. It does happen. You want a partner you feel so comfortable with you can fart in front of her and someone you love so much you'd be willing to wipe her butt when dementia comes for her in her sixties. They do exist.
Be firm with your own boundaries. Be willing to walk away. If I were to ever get married again, you can bet that I will tell her, "If the sex ever stops, honey, the marriage stops. " Love is great but there has to be a good, cold dose of reality. It's a job.
Divorce: lots of stuff on the internet is about guys saying a cunning, cruel woman with a heart of ice made off with half their wealth and they continue to owe her child support. True and not true. I made a little more than my ex did but the way the state guidelines were worded the law treated us as equal and no direct spousal support was owed. We had a "long" marriage (in state law, defined as 10 years, I think), so she was entitled to half the retirement account I accrued during the marriage. That hurt. But we also didn't fight it out--we settled and got the judge to sign off pretty quickly, relatively speaking. In my divorce recovery group there was one poor gentleman who recalled six figures' worth of lawyer fees. In that I was lucky.
