There's really no absolute way to avoid being busted if LE is determined and resourceful, other than just not hobbying. A little vigilance, common sense, and intel gathering can greatly reduce the risk though.
When they ask for stuff, most of the providers are just looking to get free alcohol or cigarettes out of the deal. I will buy things sometimes for providers I already know fairly well, but not on a first visit. Also, when they ask you to bring condoms, it's either a red flag for the aforementioned scams, or they're very unprepared which is also an indication that the visit may not be great.

Maybe the economy improving so other less risky jobs are available, maybe the increased awareness and enforcement by LE, but probably a combination of several factors.

With the disappearance of some of the most notable sites, so was the disappearance or abrupt slow down of may REAL providers. Many providers relied on these sites in their local areas or for advertising their tours. Several who did not travel were even impacted by touring gentlemen who used the sites while they traveled for business (like me). And both hobbyists and providers relied on one or 2 of these sites for reviews and verification of other providers or hobbyists.
Some may have migrated to the use of some of the social media options to advertise and or seek business. But some of the more mature and discrete providers (and hobbyists (like me)) have not opted to go the social media route for person privacy reasons.
Some of the providers I used to see when I visited other larger cities have either retired or gone UTR as the result of the Dark Days. There is the perception by many that some of the quality providers (and hobbyist) went away when those sites went away. And NO, I'm not referring to any one site in particular. SEVERAL good sites have gone by the wayside due to the Dark Days. Some worked better in some areas than they did in others.
