I disagree that Web-app numbers are a significant red flag. I know many providers who use an app because it's easier to use on a computer and some don't even have cell service. If they are only working off of WiFi, then there's a good chance I'm going to have communication issues with them if when I try to reach out they aren't on WiFi. Sorry if I was coming off a little harsh, but I prefer to email text them instead of texting them directly from my phone. That way they don't have my number as well.
Maybe I should be looking into an alternate app to bring me up to speed with the game. Any suggestions on a free one for an iPhone that seems to work well?

Ya if they are not on Wifi it can be a problem, most know it and try hard to be connected and they do it because they can not afford to have unlimited data plan on the cell phone (it is not cheap to have).
There are a few apps most are available on android and iphone. Textfree and Textnow work very well for me, I like TextNow beter but that is my option.
