Law: For the vast of majority of us, the gig is up and the damage is done when the arrest is made. The trip downtown, the printing, the mug shot, the posting of it and your name online and in the paper, the mere accusation by LE is the most damaging part.

ORDER: Whether your lawyer will eventually argue entrapment or not is after the arrest and collection of evidence and it's all well into the legal process where you are paying a lawyer for damage control in the court system. But the damage is already done.

As such, advise all to spend less time with "entrapment" and more time doing your homework and sticking with well reviewed girls and avoiding the bust to begin with.

The VA supremes have fairly narrowly defined entrapment, matching the narrow definition given by the US supremes. But narrow does not mean non-existent. Entrapment can occur, in prostitution charges as in many other types of crimes in this state - it's just that the narrow definition gives LE a lot of leeway in its actions.

Of course LE can lie, do things to win your confidence (as long as they don't break a major law themselves), etc., in the course of their jobs. If that weren't true, no narc could do his job when all a dealer would have to do is to ask if you're a cop and, by law, get an honest answer. It's the same as that bullshit they always want to use about "helping you" in trying to talk you into admitting to a crime - no cop in the action of trying to talk you into confessing is in any way helping you.

LE stings are not a constant worry here - the area departments have only limited budgets, and tend to spend it where it's most visible by concentrating on the street action, but stings off of CL/BP do occur from time to time. Enforcement efforts in general get more frequent when there's political pressure, such as an upcoming election or complaints from area residents.

But stings, while not something you want to face, aren't the only concern. There are occasional ripoffs, almost constant bait-n-switch ads, and plenty of ladies of, ahem, "mediocre quality," "excessive girth," and "just plain fugly."

Because a lot of newbies - and some not-so-newbies - need to hear it, to make them think about the realities of all this. As someone who, long long ago in a galaxy far far away, got busted for solicitation, I sure wish I had thought about it more - and had learned more about how it all works so I wouldn't have fallen for what, in hindsight, was a painfully obvious trap.
