The only way to lock in an appointment is with an independent contractor. The reliable ones will honor your appointment. Don't bother making an appointment with anyone except on the same day. If you do book in advance, you will probably be asked to confirm it the on the day of your appointment. It is inconvenient to make an appointment with a contractor (you have to commit to a certain time. Difficult on work days / days off sneaking away from the family). That is why the shops are better as walk-in locations.
