But some do, especially in light of all the attention being paid to sex trafficking these days. Fortunately, it's still perfectly legal to have a not-for-pay tryst at a hotel, and hotels are still where a lot of perfectly respectable, legal trysts take place, and hotel managers still want that business. They have no way of knowing whether or not you're paying money for the sleazy sex you plan to have in their hotel. But when I did, the most important thing is that there was no communication, text or verbal, offering anything of value for any form of sexual contact. I never offered up any information that could convict me of a crime. It is legal to meet for sex, it is not illegal to pay for time. But never have conversation about both. I always felt conspicuous if not carrying something to look like a traveler, gym bag, laptop bag ("business meeting, ya know"), backpack, something.
