I can only give you my take on this as each of us has a different risk tolerance and financial situation.
I genarally just say NO to a deposit request. If the gals ad appears on Escort Babylon, List Crawler, Mega Personals, SkipThe Games, or other low tier sites I will not pay a deposit. There are just too many low class scammers on these sites. These sites are also frequented by lower tier ladies who are terrible at time management and scheduling. HX and PD are just slightly better and I also do not send these ladies deposits. It is easier to identify the more reliable providers on HX and PD but there is still so much that can go wrong, babysitter failed to show, car broke down, or couldn't get room. Once they have your money it is as good as gone. . The only time I have ever sent a deposit is to a well established agency and the lady was well reviewed on TER and USASG. It was a $25 deposit. I will only send a small deposit that I can afford to loose (because shit happens even for the best of us) and then only for a well reviewed provider with a consistent record of reliability.
I value my privacy so when using any non-cash payment be well aware of what personal information the other end sees when making an electronic payment.
Also if you are not using a burner phone or phone app that is not tied to your peronal real world info, you should be. There just too many instances where people are being threatened with outing and blackmail attempts. Few of these blackmail threats are going to be followed through on but why take that risk.
In my 30+ years doing this, I have never been robbed, lost a deposit or been assaulted. Have I had experiences tjat were bland and not worth the $$$ spent, of course. But, once I started doing more research and just not thinking with the small head these instances have become few and far between.
