Does it make sense now why no lives were lost? Does it make sense now why the FBI task lead couldn't even put together a coherent sentence in the press conference yesterday? Does it make sense why the mayor was making light of the situation, almost laughing yesterday?

In the second, new data and contrary evidence causes said person to question the data / evidence because they already "know" the truth.

This really explains our political divide on things like Covid, the election, conspiracy theories, etc. You can't use reason and logic to convince someone who didn't use reason / logic to arrive at their conclusions to begin with. Trying is a lesson in futility so I usually mock, shame, maybe leave a snarky reply, and move on.

Trump's base (outside of the rich / greedy / religious extremists), are (and I won't mince words here) "losers" who generally have little going on in their lives that they could truly be proud of. Instead of self reflection, it's easier to blame minorities, immigrants for taking their jobs, liberal elites, educated elites who look down on them. Trump was the guy who said the quiet part out loud, who railed against Muslims, Mexicans, immigrants and others that were different from them as being the root of their problems. He said exactly what they wanted to hear and reminded them of an era where simply being white (instead of having actual successes) was reason enough to command respect and blacks, gays, and brown people knew their place.
