BIRMINGHAM – A federal grand jury today indicted an eastern Birmingham massage parlor, its owner and an employee on charges related to the human trafficking of women working there as prostitutes, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance in conjunction with the FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Birmingham Police Department.
The indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges [blue][Name(s) deleted by Admin][/blue], owner of the Parkway East business; and [blue][Name(s) deleted by Admin][/blue], an employee, with three counts of enticing an individual to travel in interstate or foreign commerce to engage in prostitution; three counts of harboring an illegal alien for private financial gain; and three counts of failing to file a factual statement about an alien.
According to the Indictment, between Aug. 17, 2008, and Aug. 17, 2010, [blue][Name(s) deleted by Admin][/blue] persuaded, induced, enticed and coerced three adult women to travel in interstate and foreign commerce to engage in prostitution. In addition, the defendants harbored the three adult women, who were illegal aliens, in a place of prostitution and for private financial gain.
“Human trafficking for the purposes of prostitution is a deplorable crime that amounts to modern day slavery,” Vance said. “Those who prey on individuals in desperate financial or life circumstances for personal profit must be prosecuted.”
The case was investigated by the Birmingham Police Department, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the FBI.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. Fortune is prosecuting the case.
Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
http://www.myfoxal.com/Global/story.asp?S=13247885
U.S. attorney calls spa a place for modern day slavery
By Ashley Nix
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC). "Its maddening to see this happening in your own community and not have the power to do anything about it, " says Richard Rutledge when speaking of Yoshiko Spa in East Birmingham.
The spa was busted by the federal government for allegations of human trafficking and prostitution. The owner and another employee were indicted by a grand jury. Rutledge says it's disturbing. "I can't remember it not being here, under some name. It's been open for well over a decade, and that shouldn't be"
It's not open anymore. The indictment claims 3 women were persuaded, induced, enticed and coerced to travel in foreign commerce and engage in prostitution. "It's nothing more than modern day slavery, " said USA Attorney for the Northern District, Joyce White Vance. "These people are held against their will, forced to perform work that they wouldn't perform in this case it relates to sex. "
Vance says it's hard to believe human trafficking goes on in Birmingham. "People always thought we meant Russian mail-order brides, " said Vance. "The idea that folks exist like that in our neighborhood I think is unthinkable, but we have to confront it, we have to be aware. "
For people like Rutledge, and others who live in the area, it's a relief.
"Whoever is responsible from the federal standpoint I want to say thank you, " said Rutledge. "We've been concerned about this facility for a number of years. "
EDITOR'S NOTE: [blue]This report was edited to remove the names of persons who were arrested from the report.
I want to say this carefully so no one gets the wrong idea here, but if you think about it, posting the names of people who have been arrested is somewhat heartless and really just helping the police in their efforts to embarrass these people.
Since this website is all about assisting people in obtaining commercial sex services, we don't want to add to the problems of the unfortunate people who have been arrested by publishing their names and/or photographs.
Thanks![/blue]
Were those women really here against their will ?
Just because they label it "human trafficking" does not make it so.
Meanwhile, McNair remains free despite being a proven criminal.
persuaded, induced, enticed and coerced ?
Sounds like a salesman to me.
Imprison ALL salesmen !

Feds not the locals made the arrests.
It looks like this was facilitated by a Alabama law that went into effect July 1.
That would be incorrect. Based on all the articles I've read, most have been reposted on this forum for you to read, this was a federal raid and federal charges. The federal government doesn't enforce or prosecute local laws. There hasn't been a single local charge against the ladies of the Y in any of the materials I've read. And according to the inditement the charges stem from a time period of Aug. 17, 2008, and Aug. 17, 2010, in which the law you stated only existed for 1 month out of a 2-year period. They cannot retroactively bring charges based on a law that just became enforceable.
This also means, sorry to disappoint, that the local District Attorney, Birmingham Chief of Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff didn't have anything to do with the charges. They may have provided man power for the arrest but that would be the limit of their involvement. My guess is they didn't even initiate the investigation. For there to have been a 2-year investigation I bet that they arrested someone else down the food chain somewhere else that lead them to the Y.
So, just to reiterate, it wouldn't have mattered if all of our local officials said don't do this. The Feds did it. It doesn't reflect anything about this state or its officials, it's a reflection of the federal government. That doesn't mean that we don't have some jacked up laws in this state. Heck, I can buy a gun to kill an animal but a woman can't buy a vibrator, legally, to give herself pleasure. I'm just saying don't blame the locals on this one.
There were/are state charges
