I always bring an "in-kind" gift to a M&G -- usually something of $25 - $50 in value. Usually costs me nothing since I have a connection that gives me samples and other freebies. Makes a great impression, but also sets me up for "showcase showdown of cash and prizes" instead of a straight cash allowance.
