Backpage, FOSTA / SESTA and prostitution

The July / August issue of Wired has a great article in it that details how and why Backpage got busted, what the current legal situation is with their case, and other information. According to the article, it was largely because of Backpage that FOSTA / SESTA got passed. The article is a fascinating read for anyone who is interested. I got my copy through my local library's digital service. Your local library might have a copy too so you don't need to go out and buy it.

You are mistaken in a number of ways
You forgot to mention how drastically different the 80's were compared to today especially in regards to crime. Especially with cameras being everywhere now. Even if it's illegal, nobody as in nobody in law enforcement cares about prostitution in Manhattan unless it's the Asian spas.
There are always news stories of brothels and agencies being busted or under investigation, and not just the asian spas. The stories may not make the papers, but if you have friends in law enforcement, or the hobby (and I do) you do hear the stories. NYPD makes sweeps of the areas were streetwalkers are prevalent at least once a month.
I think you are exaggerating a bit LOL. Especially with this being the Manhattan section. Probably one of the more safest cities in the country. Even with it being illegal, people will still hesitate to try and pull crimes on Johns. That happens more often in boroughs outside of Manhattan.
And yet, I hear stories of johns going to meet prostitutes in Manhattan that they met on switter, or bedpage, or skipthegames and getting robbed.
Even besides all of that, people have to stop being so scared about a world without Eros and Switter.
I don't think it's a question of being scared. I think it's a question of worrying about being unable to find information.
We love to bring up these review sites and forums like this as if they do anything.
If they don't do anything, then why are you here?
As I'm talking as of now, months ago I think Eros stopped allowing providers to post their website links in their Eros ads. I'm not 100 percent sure but I think they did the same for their social media pages also.
That may be true for Eros but not for all the other sites out there. Frankly, I don't see what difference it makes not to have a website in the ad. It's easy enough to find the websites and Eros isn't fooling anybody.
So now it's more likely to get providers to see you without a reference.
Have you tried? Those escorts that insist on references, still insist on references. Those escorts that just put that in their ads because someone told them to, or to scare away a certain "type" of client, are still not going to care. It's no different now than it was a year ago, or 5 years ago, or 10 years ago. The escorts who care still demand references.
The whole reference thing is silly though because it's 2019 and anybody can change numbers and identities at will.
It's not silly for those that care. And if you change your "identity" then you're not going to be able to get references. If I suddenly changed my identity to something else, then none of the escorts who know me as "Mr French" are going to be able to give me a reference as the new identity and those escorts and agencies that demand a reference aren't going to do business with me. For those that have my real name (and there are damned few of those) then I'm not going to be able to change my identity because changing one's real information in this day and age, in a post 9/11 era is damned near impossible unless you're in witness protection.
And when cops are the ones running the brothel or escort service, it's even harder to change your number or identity and get away with it. See https://nypost.com/2019/07/02/retired-nypd-detective-gets-4-to-12-years-for-running-brothel/ if you don't think that there are cops running brothels who are not trying to arrest the johns. These guys aren't the only ones. They're just the ones that have gotten caught.
I always cringed how both providers and clients in this city act like it's so dangerous when it's the safest city to hobby. And it will continue to be the safest even if the whole internet shuts down.
It might be the safest in the USA (doubtful) but it's not the safest in the world by a long shot. Even so, I still hear stories from both guys and escorts about being robbed.
Back in the 80's I got friendly with the madam of a brothel. I was out of work for about a year and I used to go over there after job hunting for the day and hang out. I'd play Monopoly and other games with the girls in the back room, between clients. I got to know the girls, the bouncers, and some of the "secret" things that most guys never see like the hidden panic buttons in the rooms. It may be a different world now than it was in the 80's but I'm willing to bet the rooms still have panic buttons, as well as all the other things I saw and know about. They might look different, and function different but I'll bet they are still there. And I'll bet the escorts who do outcalls still have the same kinds of back up and support that they did back then too. In fact, the last time I had an outcall to my hotel room (two years ago), I saw some of the same "tricks". I don't know if the girl knew that I knew but I saw them anyway. Since I had no plans to rob her I didn't care. And yet, even with all these backup systems, and checking references for "safety reasons" and all the other things these girls do to stay safe, there are still reports of them getting robbed, raped, beaten, arrested, etc.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
