We've had an empty theater or nearly empty theater a couple of times but that's before we realized or were aware of each others interests in theater play. We had a nearly empty theater for Frozen 2 one day during the week a couple of weeks back, but there was a kid / Mom / Granny there, but I got the fingering in there and during Knives Out. I'm pretty sure it'll happen soon, just depends on timing, etc. It will be interesting to see if it's head or full on play.

That way, the projector operator won't see you and call Johnny Law.

This originated to catch people recording the movie then selling that copy on the black market. Now that Regal, and I presume others, is mandating assigned seating to prevent people from seeing multiple movies on a single ticket purchase I would assume that they are monitoring who is sitting where and if one is doing something other than viewing, well. . In short, keep the activities subtle and discreet and you'll avoid any embarrassing encounters with the theater management.
