Youcon Follow-Up and Milan
I didn't want to overshare with my previous post without knowing if it was OK, but Milan said I could share that she was the one who asked me to post about Youcon's passing. They were good friends. I've spoken to her off and on recently and then saw her briefly earlier today. She's a fighter! She asked us to remember her in the days ahead. She will be sentenced on June 5th. Right now, it looks like she'll get a year.
Anyone else having major connectivity issues with the site over the last few days? Just making sure it's not just me.
You're not alone: database issues have been occurring for at least 24 hours, with sporadic connectivity issues, creating periods when the entire site has been unavailable. I tried different browsers, IPs, etc. Same results. Definitely a widespread set of issues. Critical updates? DDOS attacks? Hard to say. But it's very irregular.
I noticed STG did some database updates this afternoon as well: atypical to perform normal updates / fixes during the daytime. But that's two semi-related sites with prolonged connectivity issues during drive time. Updates usually happen in the wee hours, standard practice. Not midday or afternoon.
Worth considering (without being political) the last election was very much a referendum against online sites that have sexual content. The current administration's anti-porn efforts are a continuation of its SESTA / FOSTA Act, which provides criminal and civil penalties for anyone who owns, manages or operates an online service "with the intent to promote or facilitate the prostitution of another person" in the USA It's why USASG relocated its domain to the Netherlands. But these people are serious and they received a mandate in the most recent elections, so the day is coming when sites like this will be subject to increasingly creative efforts to disrupt. The current administration is serious about stamping it out entirely. The USA House just advanced a bill to do exactly that. And several states (whose voters won in the last USA Election) already have banned porn within their own borders.
The simple fact is, this is what people voted for, and it's absolutely happening, or at least (the leaders who won their elections) are doing everything within their power to make it so. Maybe today's connectivity issues were totally unrelated but it'll get more difficult for people to connect to sites that feature sexual content. And it's interesting to see how many clients and providers actively support leadership that absolutely promised to end online access to sexual content. Even content here, which many providers rely on for their livelihood. If you check out some providers' socials you will see very enthusiastic support for all of this. These are just facts. But it's pretty wild.
