But shoot most people sign up for those with their real name, so why can't that be shown? Wish there was a better way to search numbers. But even FB has locked down searching by numbers. Sigh.

You can get the same sort of effect from ShapChat. It's not infallible, but worth a try.
There are sites that will let you search a number by wireless provider. That can give some of the information you are seeking (is it a landline, or which cell vendor)?
