The man soon appeared at the Highlands precinct reporting the robbery about 8:30 p.m.

Though the man's story sounded bizarre, detectives took a description of the woman, and began checking at local hotels to see if anyone fitting that description had recently checked in and paid in cash.

At the DoubleTree Hotel downtown, employees confirmed that someone had, and that the woman fit the description.

About 3 a.m., officers knocked on the woman's room door and were invited inside, immediately spotting two large stacks of $20 and $50 bills on a nightstand.

When investigators asked the man and woman in the room to come to the station to answer some questions, they noticed a stack of $100 bills behind the woman.

In all, $44,521 was found in the hotel room, police said.

XXXXXXXXXXXX had spent some of the money on Lottery tickets and alcohol, but the rest is unaccounted for, according to police.

Police also said they plan to investigate and make sure the 42-year-old man obtained the cash legally.

After a couple of recent trips to Worcester, with no luck, business put me in the Lowell area yesterday around 6:30. There were no girls anywhere and LE was making their prescence known. I went through Lowell around 2:30 and there was a cute girl on Westford down by the market places. I went down walker and saw an LE vsn pulling out and a blue expedition next to a green taurus. I headed for LOWELL around 11h30 last night, made my first loop on Apple. Then middle.

7 'Johns' snared in prostitution sting

LOWELL -- Some people say you can't put a price on love, but police said they arrested seven men willing to pay for it during a reverse prostitution sting Thursday.

Three female undercover officers worked Cupples Square and Armory Park on Westford Street during the afternoon and evening.

"Usually they are approached by lone males," said Lt. Jim Hodgdon. "They just stand there and wait until they are approached by a male."

The sting was unusual in that the Johns, or customers, usually drive up to solicit sex but a few of them walked up Thursday, Hodgdon said.

The numbers were down slightly, too.

"Who knows why, we usually get a dozen or so," Hodgdon said.

Police arrested three men in Cupples Square then four more at Armory Park.

Those arrested on charges of offering money for sex included <names and addresses deleted>
