If you buy a prepaid phone, you can sign up from literally any address you want, and, thus, have a phone with literally any area code you want. The cell phone companies that sell pre-paid phones don't double-check anything to make sure you actually live at the address you use.

It's really not that hard, as I moved to ATL in May 2005 back in March 2007. Kept my ATL cell Phone due to (business) and just got a 3rd phone and a air card for Internet Access while on Road all with ATL AC at the new AT&T store on G'town Rd. And my daughter who lived in MI went to AT&T store there and got her a new phone, asked if she could get 901 number and they fixed her up. So it's not hard.

Thanks.[/QUOTE] FWIW, about 5 or 6 years ago when I was living across the river I bought a "regular" (i.e., not pre-paid) phone at a Sprint store in Memphis. Gave them my AR address at the time, and they assigned me a number in the 870 area code. Shortly (about 4-5 months thereafter) I moved to Memphis, and had to get a new phone number in AC 901 (so my phone could work with the building's security system).

So in my experience, the address you use to register the phone would govern assignment of a non-pre-paid phone. Don't see why it wouldn't work the same for a pre-paid the same way. Save for the fact that I'm a single guy and don't need a hobby phone, I'd be tempted to try to get a pre-paid phone and register it at my dad's address in the St. Louis area--then I'd have an answer for you for sure.

I don't NEED a hobby phone either but with a "real" phone they generally, for purposes of establishing your creditworthiness, want to actually verify you are who you say you are. Usually by means of a credit check, and seeing your driver's license. Kind of hard to fake your address on your credit report and driver's license, although I'm sure it can be done.

With a hobby phone, they don't give a shit who you are. You are only going to jabber for as many minutes as you have already paid for, and then your phone stops working untill you pay some more. You ain't going to stiff them and make then send the collectors after you to get their money.
