Before you snap that cell phone picture
This is an Alert for those of you who use a cell phone cameras and from time to time take a picture of your favorite provider or a maybe a SW out on the streets. You may want to rethink about doing that ever again especially if you post the picture on this site or any site.

Think of all the members across USASG posting pictures with their cell phone cameras!
Maybe this should be Rule #23, don't use cell phone pictures to post pictures.
Harpo.
Excellent post. Great information!
I knew this kind of information was on your digital camera, because when you take a picture, there is digital info in each pix, that is stored, that you do not see, but is there. It s how LE can track the owner of a camera / pix sent / posted online. That is why I never sent in the registration cards.
Harpo the info on YouTube is extremely correct. I did not know it had become this easy. Only a few years back I posted something similar, but the techno was not what it is now. It was always there, but on more expressive equipment.
Now that I am updated, and informed, I thank you Harpo, for bringing it back to my / everyone's attention. I am not a Facebook/*/Whatever fan. I just think it is giving out Too Much Personal Information. That is so DUMB, but that is the way things are now.
Avoid taking Pix with your cell phone, and get a cheap digit camera, for posting and saving pix. Don't send in the Regis. Card, don't set the date on the camera. Or set it to the wrong time and date.
Big Brother is watching, and we are doing everything possible to help him directly and indirectly.

Re: Pictures, data, GPS info
This has been great information for us all to know about. I consider myself really tech savvy (like Adam Savage in the video). I know about this "feature." It can be really useful. For example, iPhoto on the Mac uses it to plot the location of your pictures on a map for you. You can then filter your pictures to see all of the pictures taken in a particular location. Handy.
However, for those of us who don't want everything shared, this can obviously be a problem. As pointed out in the news video, some people may want to share their location. Other times you may not want to for particular pictures. Jay is right that a lot of information can be stored in the picture's metadata section. And, turning this feature off on your phone may be almost impossible too.
The good news is that if you are aware of this "feature," you can do something about it. Download an EXIF editor to edit the photo's metadata. Look for one that lets you edit the GPS data. Not all EXIF editors let you edit all of the possible fields. Another option is to save the .jpg file as a .png file. This should also strip out the EXIF metadata. Do this before you post your pictures and you should not have to worry about them.
Also, be careful. It's not just phones. Many of the newer digital cameras, video recorders, and even some of the memory cards themselves have GPS tagging built into them. I would expect that it is easier to turn this off on the cameras (not the memory cards), but I would check first. AND, always check the files before you post or send them, just to be sure.
[Update]
On Windows 7 (and probably Vista), right click on the .jpg file, go to "properties," switch to the "details" tab. Scroll down the list to see all of the metadata stored in the photo. Windows XP does not show all of the EXIF metadata (including the GPS info) so don't be fooled. The same is true for older versions of Photoshop. On a Mac, "Get Info" will not show the GPS information, but if you open the photo in Preview and then "Show Inspector" under the Tools menu, you can see all of the metadata, including GPS info if it is there.
Hope that helps everyone who is interested.
The jpeg image format that most phones and cameras use for images has the ability to contain a LOT of information. GPS info, date, time etc. With gps-enabled cell phone pictures (most 3G and above have this feature) , the exact location within about 15 feet, along date and time is stored within the image structure. Cell phones pick the time stamp up from the current cell tower. The only way that may limit the ability of the phone to store the info with the pic is to go into the setup and turn off the cellular service (like going into the airplane mode on an iPhone). Taking a picture when the phone can't get the info should prevent the info being included. You may also want to consider that any gps enabled phone will pinpoint your exact location anytime the phone is on and within reach of a cell tower.
Clearing ALL data from a picture
There is another method that I sometimes use to clear data from pictures.
Open up the picture (s) in windows, then use the printscreen button to take a snapshot of your screen while they are open. Create a new file in your photo editing software, and then just paste the screen shot in and crop / save. This may create a lower resolution file, but I typically use this method when posting a picture of something on the web where Hi-res isn't always crucial. This method will completely destroy any exif or metadata associated with the original pic.
Amazing wealth of knowledge. Here!
It is always amazing and I should not be surprised but I am, of the wealth of knowledge and information our forum members have.
We need a "Misc." Forum to just report any information on anything, of valve, or anything you think people should know. I am not talking about voicing opinions, but posting some hardcore information. Maybe we already do?
Anyway, this is information worthy of a section just like the 22 rules of the street's. Posted section.
Hummm, Not a Bad Idea!
