Cheaper and easier than burner phones are apps that you can download on to your existing phone that will give you a new phone # without the added cost of a new phone. I have downloaded Textfree and have used it at no cost. (I believe there are others) When I'm not using it, I turn the ring and text tones to silent. It's worked for me as a great alternative to hiding another phone and you can earn free minutes by watching ads. Just a thought that I hope may help others.

There was a court case where someone was convicted because he had his burner and cellphone on him at the same time, thus they could prove he was in a certain area at a particular time. But I think that it getting too close to the tin hat paranoid. I really do need to get a burner though and leave the battery / sim card out.
