Thanks.[/QUOTE]You could have been a lost delivery man for all they know. Cops didn't have any reasonable suspicion (for example, traffic violation, crime being committed), to pull you over. Simple as that however you were lucky that they didn't decide to break police procedure and mess with you.

Cops most likely ran your plates for warrants. That warrant check will be noted in their system. I doubt you'll get a letter sent to you. But the letter thing has happened in some places if you Google it.

Got to watch for the cleaners. They get bored cleaning. Try to park on the street if you can. Blending in is key. Small empty parking lots are the worst for blending in. And yes, very possible that the motel had assigned parking. Next time, scope the place out ahead of time and observe what's going on. That has saved me a couple of times.

Let me tell you a story—different plot, but I believe same story.

I walked to the nearest bench and pretended to use it to try to sleep. I started planning my federal and state criminal defense. Wiped my phone. Listened to the beeps and clanks of a commercial vehicle moving position and taking on a multi-ton load. Kept my face dry and drunk as the sky lightened.

Heard the tow truck's engine rev up and its brakes hiss. Watch as it turns south onto Sepulveda WITH SOME OTHER CAR LOADED. Thirty seconds later, the B&W SUV and a couple other unmarked sedans cars turned north, the quickest route to Van Nuys Station. I stood up and couldn't help but have a steadier, more assured gait. My car was undisturbed. Could it be? I quickly walked back to my ditch spot. Case was untouched. I grabbed it and drove home.

My hypothesis is that I happened to have the bad luck to visit a motel cooperating in a streetwalker sting operation, and the good luck that Uncle LEO was too busy crowing over the minnows he was catching that he failed to notice the prize marlin in the same waters.
