Average agency rates today are around $350. In 2000, that would have equated to $200. Are you saying that prices were even cheaper for mid / high-level agencies?
The truth is that we live in an increasingly globalized world where more information leads to better economic decisions (more supply and more demand). Northern Virginia is no longer a quiet rural-ish suburb of the 70's but a fast growing urban environment of over 2 million residents with one of the highest standards of living in the country, back-ended by high paying jobs. The truth of the price squeeze is not that SW are charging too much, it's that some people have been left behind by the influx of more skilled, higher paid workers that now dominate the area. SWs can't charge less than the standard of living in the area and high-level SWs use a low volume model that requires a smaller pool of higher paid customers (which some people seem to not be apart of). You cannot beat easily beat that by bottom-up changes (you not shopping at Whole Foods hasn't changed it's proliferation in the area), but rather through broader changes.
If you really want to fix things, just put people into power who are working to de-stigmatize, decriminalize, and legalize the whole industry.
