So I'm curious as to what the forum feels the etiquette is concerning tipping for services rendered (or even if there are any required) for independent contractors. In restaurants 15% is considered normal for a waitresses service and that amount can slide up or down depending on how the customer feels she performed. Not sure if this holds true for other areas of service or if so if there is a customary standard which I am unaware of. Where it's a given that the waitress is paid relatively little and lives off of her tips, I'm not sure if this still applies to independent contractors whose service charges equal the cost of a month's work of utility bills for a family. Up front costs can be so high that in many cases I assume any gratuity is already worked into the price. Then again I hate to walk away from someone and be considered a "cheap prick".
