I bought a physical card from a store, but when I tried to redeem it, Google hit me with a "we need more details" error. I had to upload a picture of the card and receipt and wait several days for Google Customer support to respond and say, "Oh, ok, go ahead and redeem the code".
There was no chat or telephone option.
Once I did that, I was able to go through the app on my phone and apply my Google Pay credits and renew a Premium subscription.
What brand of physical gift card still works? I used SERVE numerous times in the past, which you can get from Walgreens, but that stopped working as well.
